The food you bring home shapes what you eat for the whole week. A little planning before you shop helps you skip impulse buys, reduce waste and keep your kitchen stocked with foods that nourish your body. You do not need fancy ingredients or a big budget to shop well, just a simple plan and a few smart habits.
Plan before you go
Take a few minutes to plan meals for the week, check what you already have and write a shopping list grouped by section. Shopping after a meal, rather than when you are hungry, makes it much easier to stick to your list and avoid sugary snacks.
Shop the edges first
Fresh produce, lean proteins, eggs and dairy are often found around the outer aisles of the store. Fill your cart there first, then visit the inner aisles for whole grains, beans, nuts, frozen vegetables and canned fish. Frozen fruits and vegetables are picked at their peak and are just as nutritious as fresh.
Read labels with confidence
Look at the ingredient list as well as the front of the pack. Choose foods with short ingredient lists you recognize, and compare similar products for added sugar, salt and saturated fat. Words like natural or light on the front do not always mean a food is a healthy choice.
A thoughtful shopping list is a quiet act of self care that pays off at every meal of the week.
